4th classes were very lucky last week when Amy from Amber centre with Trinity College Dublin visited our school to do a Nanoscience Workshop!
We learned quite a lot, had lots of fun and are now interested in more scientific investigations!
In case you didn't know 'Nanoscience is the study of structures and materials on an ultra-small scale. A nanometre is one billionth of a metre. The physical and chemical properties of matter change at the nano level.' We experiemented with crushed and broken alka selzer tablets to see what happens when mixed with water, shaken twice and put on its side in a small yogurt bottle with the lid on. Our Tally results proved the crushed tablets exploded much quicker than the broken tablets.We learned that the smaller the pieces of the tablet, the faster it fizzes (therefore explodes) as the smaller pieces have more surface area.
